I Finally Bought A La Marzocco Espresso Machine Here’s My Honest Opinion

At some point in life, most dads develop an appreciation for quality equipment.

    It starts with tools.

    Then it’s barbecue grills.

    Then camping gear.

Before you know it, you’re researching coffee machines that cost more than your first car.

That’s pretty much how I ended up with a La Marzocco Espresso Machine sitting on my kitchen bench.

To be completely honest, my partner deserves most of the credit—or blame—for this purchase.

She loves her coffee far more than I do.

I enjoy a good coffee every morning, but she’s the type of person who can instantly tell when a café changes beans, uses the wrong milk or slightly over-extracts an espresso shot. Meanwhile, I’m standing there thinking, “Yep, tastes like coffee.”

For years she’d wanted a serious home espresso setup. I was harder to convince.

As a tradie, I’m usually comfortable spending money on quality tools because I know they’ll earn their keep. Spending several thousand dollars on a machine that turns ground beans into liquid seemed a little harder to justify.

    At least initially.

The reality is I probably wouldn’t have spent that amount on a coffee machine myself.

Now that I’ve lived with one?

    I absolutely love it.

The question is whether a La Marzocco Espresso Machine is actually worth the investment or whether it’s simply a beautiful piece of Italian engineering designed to separate coffee lovers from their savings account.

    Here’s my honest opinion.

    The Short Version

If you’re looking for the quick answer, here it is.

The La Marzocco is one of the most enjoyable appliances I’ve owned.

Not because it magically makes better coffee than every other machine on earth.

Not because it looks impressive sitting on the bench.

And definitely not because it was cheap.

It’s because every part of the ownership experience feels premium.

    The build quality is exceptional.

    The coffee quality is outstanding.

    The consistency is remarkable.

And unlike many expensive purchases, the novelty hasn’t worn off.

Months later, I still look forward to using it every morning.

    Would I buy one again?

    Yes.

Would I recommend it to everyone?

    No.

    Let’s get into why.

Why La Marzocco Has Such A Strong Reputation

Even people who aren’t particularly interested in coffee have probably heard of La Marzocco.

The company has been building espresso machines since 1927 and has developed a reputation for producing some of the most respected machines in both commercial and home coffee environments.

Visit almost any specialty coffee shop and there’s a good chance you’ll find a La Marzocco machine behind the counter.

You can learn more about their history through the official La Marzocco website.

What appealed to me wasn’t the marketing.

    It was the reputation.

After years working alongside skilled tradespeople, I’ve learned that quality products usually earn respect through performance, not advertising.

When professionals repeatedly trust the same equipment, I pay attention.

    First Impressions

The first thing I noticed was the build quality.

This thing feels like it was built by people who expected it to survive an apocalypse.

The stainless steel construction is substantial.

    The controls feel precise.

    The steam wand feels commercial-grade.

    Nothing rattles.

    Nothing feels flimsy.

Nothing feels like it was designed by an accountant trying to save twelve cents during manufacturing.

As someone who appreciates quality tools, I immediately understood why these machines command a premium price.

You can physically feel where the money went.

Does It Actually Make Better Coffee?

This is the question that matters.

Because if the coffee isn’t noticeably better, none of the other stuff matters.

    The answer is yes.

    The coffee is exceptional.

    However, there’s an important caveat.

A premium espresso machine doesn’t magically fix bad coffee beans or poor technique.

If you’re buying stale supermarket beans and expecting miracles, prepare for disappointment.

The machine gives you the ability to produce exceptional coffee consistently.

You still need decent beans and a quality grinder.

When everything comes together though, the results are genuinely impressive.

    The espresso tastes cleaner.

    Flavours become more distinct.

    Milk texturing becomes easier.

    Consistency improves dramatically.

And consistency is one of the biggest differences between average machines and great machines.

    The Learning Curve

I won’t pretend I was pulling perfect shots on day one.

    Far from it.

    Some early attempts tasted fantastic.

Others tasted like I accidentally brewed disappointment.

    That’s normal.

    Espresso has a learning curve.

Fortunately, there are excellent resources available through communities like Home-Barista and educational content from James Hoffmann.

After a few weeks, things started improving.

    The machine itself remained consistent.

    The variable was me.

And unfortunately, there’s no upgrade kit available for operator error.

Daily Use As A Busy Dad

This is where the La Marzocco really shines.

Most reviews focus on technical specifications.

I care more about real-world ownership.

How does it fit into daily life?

How enjoyable is it to use?

    Does it become a chore?

Or does it genuinely improve your mornings?

    For me, it’s the latter.

Making coffee has become part of my morning routine rather than simply a task to complete.

    The process feels satisfying.

    The machine heats quickly.

    The controls are intuitive.

    Everything feels smooth and predictable.

When you’re waking up before sunrise and trying to prepare for another busy day, predictability becomes surprisingly valuable.

Why It Reminds Me Of Quality Tools

One reason I appreciate the La Marzocco so much is because it reminds me of professional-grade tools.

As a tradie, I’ve spent years using equipment ranging from budget-friendly rubbish to genuinely exceptional gear.

The difference becomes obvious very quickly.

Cheap equipment works until it doesn’t.

    Quality equipment simply works.

    Day after day.

    Year after year.

The La Marzocco gives me that same feeling.

    It’s built to be used.

    Pros And Cons

    Pros

    • Exceptional build quality
    • Outstanding espresso quality
    • Commercial-grade engineering
    • Excellent temperature stability
    • Beautiful design
    • Strong resale value
    • Consistent performance
    • Enjoyable daily ownership experience
    • Built to last

    Cons

    • Very expensive
    • Requires a quality grinder
    • Learning curve for beginners
    • Takes up bench space
    • Overkill for casual coffee drinkers

    La Marzocco vs Breville Comparison

One comparison that comes up constantly is La Marzocco versus Breville.

    I’ve used both.

    Here’s my practical take.

    Feature La Marzocco Breville
    Build Quality Exceptional Very Good
    Coffee Quality Outstanding Excellent
    Longevity Excellent Good
    Ease Of Use Moderate Easier
    Price Premium More Affordable
    Commercial Feel Yes No
    Resale Value Strong Average

    Breville offers fantastic value.

La Marzocco offers a different ownership experience entirely.

It’s similar to comparing a professional workshop table saw with a quality DIY version.

    Both can perform the job.

One simply feels built for decades of service.

    Is It Worth The Money?

This depends entirely on how much you value coffee.

If coffee is simply caffeine delivery, no.

If you buy one takeaway coffee every few weeks, definitely not.

If you’re already perfectly happy with your current setup, no.

However, if you’re drinking multiple coffees daily and genuinely enjoy the process, the maths changes.

The cost spreads across years of use.

    The convenience increases.

    The coffee quality improves.

And perhaps most importantly, it becomes something you genuinely enjoy using.

    The Unexpected Benefit

The biggest surprise wasn’t the coffee quality.

It was how much my partner and I both enjoy using it.

As I mentioned earlier, she was the driving force behind the purchase.

She’s always appreciated great coffee more than I have.

Ironically, I may have become the bigger fan.

Every morning starts with a better coffee experience.

And when you’ve got kids, responsibilities, work deadlines and a never-ending list of things to fix around the house, small improvements to daily life become surprisingly meaningful.

    Gear Dads Tend To Appreciate

I’ve noticed that dads who appreciate quality coffee equipment often appreciate quality gear in general.

If you’re looking at outdoor cooking setups, check out my comparison of the Weber Spirit and Genesis:

And if you enjoy spending time outdoors with the family, my guide to the best camping gear covers some of the equipment I’ve found genuinely worthwhile:

Much like coffee machines, some gear lives up to the hype.

    Some don’t.

    Reliability And Long-Term Ownership

One area where La Marzocco consistently performs well is reliability.

Many owners report using their machines for years without significant issues.

That’s one reason resale values remain so strong.

You can also browse owner experiences through communities such as Reddit Coffee Community.

The older I get, the more I value products that last.

Replacing cheap products repeatedly gets old quickly.

Buying quality once often ends up costing less in the long run.

Who Should Buy A La Marzocco Espresso Machine?

    This machine is ideal for:

    • Serious coffee lovers
    • Daily coffee drinkers
    • Home baristas
    • Dads who appreciate quality equipment
    • People upgrading from mid-range machines
    • Users seeking commercial-grade performance

    It may not suit:

    • Casual coffee drinkers
    • Tight budgets
    • People wanting maximum simplicity
    • Anyone unwilling to learn espresso basics

    My Final Thoughts

After spending considerable time with a La Marzocco Espresso Machine, I finally understand why they’re so highly regarded.

    The build quality is exceptional.

    The coffee quality is outstanding.

The ownership experience feels genuinely premium.

Most importantly, it delivers exactly what it promises.

    No gimmicks.

    No flashy marketing tricks.

No unnecessary features designed purely to impress people on social media.

Just a beautifully engineered machine that produces fantastic coffee.

Would I have bought one without my partner encouraging the idea?

    Probably not.

    Do I regret buying it?

    Not for a second.

In fact, it’s one of the few expensive purchases I’ve made that genuinely exceeded expectations.

And coming from a dad who usually spends his money on tools and tech, that’s saying something.
